The name ‘Canyon’ is not accidental: it immediately recalls the image of deep crevasses that form naturally in the landscape, where light, shadow and form interact in unique and evocative ways. This idea has been architecturally reinterpreted in the project through the use of sloping volumes, large open spaces and a geometry that guides the visitor’s gaze and movement towards the heart of the building, as if one were inside a natural canyon. The feeling of discovery and wonder accompanies those who venture between the levels of the tower, crossing spaces that open and close, creating dynamics of light and shadow that change throughout the day.
One of the most characteristic elements of the Athel Tower – Canyon is its perforated façade that envelops the building like a light, permeable skin. The geometric motifs that decorate the exterior surface are not only aesthetically appealing, but are inspired by the local tradition of Arab handicrafts and textiles, with designs that evoke textile motifs typical of Saudi culture. During the day, sunlight filters through the façade, casting suggestive shadows inside the spaces, while at night the building transforms into an illuminated lantern silhouetted against the Riyadh sky.
The interior of the tower is dominated by a large central courtyard, which serves as the fulcrum of the entire composition. Like a natural canyon, the central space opens up towards the sky, allowing light and air to penetrate freely. This courtyard is an area for socialising and relaxing, a place where nature and architecture meet to create an urban oasis. Fountains, hanging gardens and green spaces along the various levels of the structure complete the picture, offering users an experience of well-being and comfort in a cool and regenerating environment, a contrast to the desert climate outside.

The perforated façade acts as a passive solar screen, protecting the interior from intense heat and improving the building’s energy efficiency. The roof gardens and plants used along the various levels not only help cool the environment, but also improve air quality, promoting a healthier indoor microclimate.
In addition, the central courtyard acts as a bioclimatic element, promoting natural ventilation and reducing the need for artificial cooling systems, while maintaining optimal comfort for users.
