Architectural project for the Bisagno Stream
The architectural project for the Bisagno Stream reinterprets the watercourse as a latent urban infrastructure, currently perceived as a barrier and residual space, yet holding the potential to become a continuous axis of connection, slow mobility, and public life. The intervention is based on a paradigm shift: rather than opposing the river, the project embraces its changing nature, transforming hydrogeological risk into a guiding principle for spatial design.
The riverbed and its banks are reimagined as a system of resilient and multifunctional spaces, capable of adapting to seasonal variations in water levels. The fluvial section is shaped through terraces, stepped platforms, and natural surfaces that allow everyday use during dry periods and controlled flooding during peak flows, while maintaining formal continuity, urban legibility, and architectural quality even under critical conditions.
The project establishes a continuous linear park along the Bisagno, integrating pedestrian and cycling paths, green spaces, areas for sport, play, and social interaction, as well as a sequence of small urban spaces distributed along the route. These interventions are conceived not as isolated objects, but as parts of a single infrastructural landscape, capable of reconnecting the neighbourhoods crossed by the stream and strengthening their identity.
Particular attention is given to the relationship between the two riverbanks, which are currently physically and perceptually separated. The project introduces new systems of crossing and connection, combining bridges, platforms, and lightweight structures that become true suspended urban spaces, where the act of crossing is enriched by places for pause, observation, and encounter. In certain sections, architecture takes on a more iconic role, becoming a recognizable landmark within the fluvial landscape.
The intervention also addresses the theme of mobility, proposing light and integrated infrastructures that coexist with the riverbed without compromising its hydraulic function. The proposed solutions are closely integrated with the design of open spaces, avoiding overlaps between vehicular traffic and public life, and restoring continuity and quality to the urban environment.
Overall, the architectural project for the Bisagno constructs a vision of urban regeneration in which landscape, infrastructure, and architecture merge into a single resilient system, transforming a problematic water infrastructure into a new green and social backbone for the city of Genoa.
